Book Notes: Dark Wire

I’m not certain where I first learned of Joseph Cox’s book, Dark Wire, but I am grateful. It’s a delightful read that’s full of characters that seem fictional however they’re all too real.

Dark Wire is the story of the longest sting operation in history of law enforcement. It involves multiple countries and numerous local and national police and law enforcement. It resulted in drug confiscations, the prevention of murders and assassinations, and thousands of arrests across the globe.

It begins with the arrest of a minor gangster who ran an illegal gambling and drug trafficking ring. His main method of communications was an encrypted phone from a company called Phantom Secure. FBI investigations lead to the takedown of the company and its founder. It also led to the idea – what if the FBI started its own encrypted phone network?

Cox’s book is engaging and fast paced. It’s great fun and would make a great movie. Fortunately Jason Bateman and Netflix think so too as it’s currently in development. But don’t wait for it – pick up a copy of Dark Wire at your local bookstore or library.
