Book Notes: Quick Takes

Picks and Shovels – Cory Doctorow

This is the third of the Martin Hench novels. Hench is Doctorow’s forensic accountant who was first introduced to readers in Red Team Blues and then again in The Bezzle. Red Team Blues was a great caper in the world of crypto while The Bezzle wasn’t for me. Picks and Shovels is more of an origin story of young Marty and the beginning of the desktop computer industry. It has all the early versions of the tech villains we all know and deal with daily. It’s a tale of good versus evil that ended realistically. Will we see more of Marty? I certainly hope so.

Slow Horses – Mick Herron

Having watched the Apple+ series twice, I waited patiently for the first of the Slow Horses series to be available at my library. It was well worth the wait. The series has done a great job translating the book however as one can expect, there’s details and small points that are overlooked. If you enjoy a great spy thriller, then seek out the gang at Slough House.

Caught – Harlan Coben

The prolific mystery author, Harlan Coben, has had many novels adapted into limited series on Netflix. We’ve watched one or two. Recently we were wandering through the neighborhood Goodwill store and found one of his books, Caught. Since the money was going to a good cause, it was worth a few dollars. I read about 50 pages and discovered that his writing is rare – as it’s not well done.
