Reflections

Here Today

Having nothing in particular to read last evening, I spent some time reading past issues of Genii magazine. A review in the final Kaufman issue sent me back to the feature a decade ago on Lubor Fiedler. While searching the archives, I spotted a cover story on Jared Kopf. Each thread led to another. No specific intention – just what caught my eye.

While reading the articles, I couldn’t help noticing the advertisements. Products, books, digital media of all sorts. What was strange and a little sad was that, for the most part, I couldn’t recall any of them. None of them stayed with me through the passing years.

I’m sure that there some fine products in there but why didn’t I remember them? Perhaps because they were only there for that moment and replaced by the next new thing the next issue. I imagine that there were some things that popped up and vanished into the background too quickly to make it into the magazine.

Many years ago in earlier issues, there were advertisements that ran month after month – that doesn’t happen often now. Is that good or bad? Fortunately it’s not my decision. However it must be challenging for the creators and the manufacturers to continually make new products.

It could explain why we hear about dealers and creators for awhile and then they vanish. It must be exhausting to try to keep up.
