The Phoenix: Volume 1 Number 12

Yeah, I know. It’s been awhile since the last installment.

Number 12 is all Lu Brent. According to Genii’s Magipedia:

Lu Brent (1903 – 1993) was a semi-professional magician starting in 1927. He specialized in small magic. His legal name was Benjamin Joseph Lubrant. The name Lu Brent came accidentally, from a clerk’s mistake, when Lu enlisted for six years in the Army, in 1921. Lu liked the mistake and kept it. He was known for coming up with new ways to present other magicians’ effects.

The issue opens opens with Together Again, a four ace assembly that appears quite open and clean. However, as Eugene Burger often said, “every miracle has its price.” Together Again requires preparation as well as clean up.

One Ahead Peek is a parlor setting sleight to gain the identity of three peeked cards. How’d He Find It! is seriously a lot of counting cards to find a selection. Counting cards is a tough procedure to cover.

Site-Unseen is the selection of four cards: three by a peek and the fourth from the fan. The fourth card aids the performer in locating the other selections. The red flag for me in this is placing the deck behind your back to execute the special actions. Finishing the issue is the False Face Glimpse – a utility that allows you to sneak a peek at a key card.

As usual, Bruce Elliott shares the latest news on magic themed movies and live performance.
