The Phoenix: Volume 1 Number 8

May 1, 1942’s issue features an unusual layout as write-up’s don’t flow as one would expect. For example, the Gibson submission, Soothsayer, starts on the right hand column and ends on the left. One would expect the other way around.

The opening effect is L. Vosburgh Lyons’ Call It A Puzzle is a bit of magic using 6 discs with various symbols. The helper spells a word, reverses discs, and finally hides any disc of their choosing. The performer reveals which side of the hidden disc is uppermost. Yeah, not for me either.

One Good Trick is a clever card to pocket which is followed by Deserves Another, a card prediction that leverages the spot the performer finds themselves at the conclusion of the first effect. While there’s no credit, I assume these are Gibson pieces.

Phoenix Jr Reports on the Knights of Magic show. Just like club shows today, technical problems happened.

Soothsayer is a different version of Annemann’s Foremost from issue 5. It’s a two person mentalism piece. If Foremost was of interest, then Gibson’s variation would be too.

The Backroom is co-written by Gibson and Elliott. The former writes about their experiences editing magic magazines while the latter comments on the issue at hand.
