Each limb of Patanjali’s Eight-Limbed path has a direct correspondence to learning and growing as a magician and the performance of magic. For me, they are a path to being an awake and present performer. I came to this as process for my own development. I’m sharing it here an invitation to explore, not as me telling you what you need to do or rules that you need to follow as that approach hardens into dogma. We definitely do not need any more dogma in magic or our lives.
The Eight limbs were divided into outer and inner practices by Patanjali.
- The outer practices of Yamas, Niyamas, Asana, Pranayama and Pratyahara are found in the second book called Practices or Sadhana Pada.
- The last three practices of Dharana, Dhyana and Samadhi are considered to be inner practice and are found in the third book, Accomplishments or Vibhuti Pada.
In their relation to performance magic, all Eight Limbs have an inner and solitary practices as well as an outer or performance application.
