Samadhi
The eighth and final limb is Samadhi. Samadhi has been described as bliss, nirvana, self-realization or union with Spirit or Source. It is the expanse of meditation.
Magicians can think of it as the point where all of our work bears fruit in a performance that has the magic that we are looking to co-create with our audience. It is being in the flow of the performance. It is that moment of astonishment, of wonder, of wow.
Magic’s Samadhi is the union with our participants. Our invitation to co-create the magical experience has been extended and accepted. The conjurer and the audience are engaged in the dance of magic.
Concluding Thoughts
All of this work leads us to the performance where we are fully awake, fully present and fully grounded in our art that we can co-create this relational space of magic. We are able to transcend technique and script and achieve that union, the yoga of conjuring.
Just as there are not that many enlightened masters, there aren’t that many performers who achieve this in their magic but it is a goal that I believe we can work towards.
These fourteen posts have been part of my magic practice for many years. I debated if and how I should share them. They were originally a twenty minute presentation that I delivered to a wonderful group of magicians at a very special event. They become a manuscript that was edited, re-written, and edited again. These posts are probably why I started this blog. Thanks for reading them. It’s much appreciated.
