The Phoenix: Volume 1 Number 11

Magic of the Knights of Magic is featured in the June 12, 1942 issue. According to Magipedia, “Knights of Magic, an independent order of magicians, was formed in New York City in 1920 by Rachel and Simon Cottlow. The organization was founded to promote sociability, fraternity and harmony among local magicians. Its reports could be found in the Sphinx.”

The opener is Dave Spindell’s Out of the Smoke – a version of a Clayton Rawson cigarette effect. It’s clever however out of fashion 83 years later.

String-Ring is Harry Burns’ ring and string pocket magic. It’s a simple and practical approach to getting a ring onto a piece of string.

Lady in Red from Paul Morris is a fun bit for an adult audience. A photo of an attractive woman is shown. As a poetic version is recited, photos of her clothing are removed from the folded photo. At the conclusion, she’s not wearing much at all – depending on your audience’s sensibilities.

Dr. Aaron Weiss’ Mathematics of Magic is a magic square. Personally I find magic squares to be too procedural for my tastes.

The Backroom has a correction for the previous issue’s Magician’s Nightmare as well as the news and gossip of the day.
